Latest Telecom News (12th -15 th July)

      1 )  Airtel Digital TV, Viacom 18-colors partnership

·         Airtel Digital TV partners Viacom 18-colors for movie content.
·         It is for audio and video content subscription.
·         So Now Airtel Digital TV customers can now access movies and videos on Viacom 18-Colors' channel Superhitz.
·         Airtel customers will watch movies of their choice as per their convenience during the day. For this, the customer will have to pay Rs 20 per month which is exclusive of taxes.
     
      2 )   Reliance Communication has recruited former Verizon executive KAUSHIK PILLALAMARRI to head its data and device functions.

       3 ) CVC to probe TRAI’s pricing proposal for 2G.

     4 )  Bharti Airtel has signed a 10 year contract with IBM for its Africa IT solutions. The relationship with IBM started way back in 2004 when Airtel signed up with IBM for the IT applications for its entire network in India.

        5 )  Intelligence agencies (IB), responsible for the security of our country has asked the DOT to ensure that telecom operators put in monitoring systems that would allow IB to get a glimpse into real time updates by users on social networking sites.

·         Telecom providers do not have lawful interception facilities for tracking websites using Web 2.0.
·         DOT is requested to instruct all the service providers to upgrade their monitoring systems to handle Web 2.0 traffic.
·         The providers, though, are not ready to bear the costs.
·         Application service providers are beyond the purview of Indian laws and hence the only option was to request the service providers to do so.
·         Under Indian Laws, operators are allowed to use encryption up to 40 bit whereas most of the data services use much higher encryption to make it secure.
      
      6 )  Telecom Commission, the apex decision making body in DOT has decided to take the views of the Law Ministry on the proposal to demerge surplus land held under VSNL (now Tata Communications) into a new.

·         773 acres of land spread across Delhi, Pune, Kolkata and Chennai lying is untouched.
·         When Tata’s took over VSNL, the 773 acres of land was not part of the deal.
·         DOT wants to hive off surplus land into a separate company to unlock the value by selling it.
·         There is a dispute as to who will dispose off the land and how.

       7 ) In Tamil Nadu, VAT for handsets has been raised to 14% from 4%. In Maharashtra VAT has risen to 8.5% (It is 4% is every other state in India except UP where it is 4.5%). It has affected the revenue collection. The revenue collected from the mobile handset industry by way of VAT and Octroi dropped by 25 per cent and 75 per cent, respectively, in the first ten days of July.

       8 ) Vodafone, Idea, Airtel in pact for pan-India 3G services.

·         They entered into a bilateral roaming agreement with Idea and Airtel in circles where they have not built their own 3G network.
·         The three will now use each other's networks through intra-circle roaming arrangements where they do not have licences.
·         Idea offers 3G services for Delhi and Kolkata circles using Vodafone’s Network.
·         Vodafone and Bharti Airtel offer 3G services in AP & Kerala and Gujarat respectively through Idea’s 3G network.

       9 )   Intel Demonstrates “Cloud in a Box”.

·         It is aimed at converting capex into revenue expenditure (pay-as-you-use model).
·         Intel's cloud-specific technologies include TXT (Trusted Execution Technology), which checks for the physical integrity of the hardware to ensure that nobody has tampered with it and AES-NI (Advanced Encryption Standard - New Instructions), which is designed to speed up encryption at the hardware level.

      10) Sistema Shyam Teleservices (MTS), has high speed data connectivity (HSD) along the Delhi-Jaipur National Highway. It offers seamless connectivity for its customers.

·         MTS plans to take Broad Band usage to the next level.
·         For enhanced customer experience, the company also plans to put in place a robust retail network along all the national highways.

   11 ) Finance Ministry urges DOT to auction broad band spectrum.

·         FM has asked DOT to go in for a fresh round of auction this fiscal to factor in Rs 13,000 crores as non-tax revenues in the budget estimates 2011-2012.
·         DOT has 20Mhz of spectrum to auction but wasn’t able to still on the grounds that Defence is not vacating.
·         FM has identified the 2.3 GHz band to be sold as it is already available with DOT.

      12 )  GSM subscriptions growth slips for second month in a row.

·         It is due to lack of competition in terms of tariffs offered.
·         Hence has cut down on the number of dual SIM.
·         MNP may have put the breaks on the DUAL-SIM market.
 13)  Tata Teleservices launches Family Plan.
·          Tata Teleservices Ltd has launched an exclusive Family Plan for its new and existing Tata Indicom and Tata Walky post-paid customers. The plan comes with a host of benefits available in a common pool like free local CUG and pooling of free SMS and minutes.
·         Mr Radhakrishnan K.V., Chief Operating Officer, Kerala Circle, said the plan comes with a monthly rental of Rs 499 for three family members. Customers can add up to 2 more members at an additional cost of Rs150 per member.
·         Under the monthly plan, they can avail the benefit of PPS (pay per second) tariff and can make all national calls (Local & STD) at 1paise/second. All SMS will be charged at 50 paise

1 14 ) Tata Teleservices has written to DOT to release the spectrum for its GSM services in 39 districts across the country.

·         The company, which had got 2G licences in 2008, had not got start up spectrum of 4.4Mhz in Delhi and 39 other districts.
·         Telecom Dispute Settlement Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) upheld an appeal by the company and ordered DOT to allocate GSM spectrum to Tata Teleservices in Delhi.


      15) New Law to give the authority to DOT to take the spectrum allotted to service providers who are not using it.

·         At present the operators have to just show the geographical reach and whether the necessary infrastructure is kept in place.
·         The move is aimed at making sure that there is efficient use of the spectrum allotted and the onus is now on the service providers.

      16)  Other News:  Sonalika Group plans to introduce new Tractors for the Indian rural segment. The company that produces these tractors is International Tractor Limited (ITL).

·         Here the farmer need not more around in the tractor in the field. He can remote control it so that it saves him from extreme weather conditions.
·         ITL is looking to leverage India’s fast growing mobile Telecom network in rural areas.

     17) Bharti infratel to go for an IPO to sell out its 10% stake to raise about $ 1 billion .Bharti is doing so to setup an exit option for PE’s. It had collected $1.25 billion in 07-08 from these PE’s.

     18) Applications being developed to help users easily toggle between facebook and google+
·         Move to picassa – an application that helps to move your pics from facebook to google+
·         Google+facebook – An application by the help of which user can see their updates of facebook even from google+
·         Like vs plus – It is a voting platform which helps in comparing like and plus features of facebook and google+ respectively

      19)  Battle between Apple and Samsung over Smartphones and tablets patents will worse their supply relations. Worsening of this relation will give way to Toshiba Corp, Micron, Hynix Semiconductor, Intel and TSMC to cash on $5 – plus relationship.

      20)  EAFT Technologies, a start-up based in Bangalore, has launched a tablet device-—Magic Tile Marathon. 
Weighing in at less than a kilogram, the device which runs on Google’s Android operating system is priced at Rs 29,990 and will compete in a market dominated by Apple’s iPad

      22)  New application named Foursquare and forecast  has been developed for mobile phones which tells about your current location and your friends current location respectively.
